MEDIA COACH
Josh Purdy
What did you do before you were a Miner?
+ Before joining Media Minefield, I worked as a public relations and media relations consultant, partnering with agencies and brands across tech, health care, and finance. In this role, I led earned media strategy for clients such as Polaroid, HP, T-Mobile, Merrill Lynch, Unisys and Reltio, securing high-impact coverage, crafting messaging for major funding rounds and CSR announcements and serving as a trusted advisor to C-level executives.
I also held roles at agencies such as Weber Shandwick and Edelman as well as in-house positions with Honeywell, Leadpages, 75F and Medibio. Across each of these positions, I built a reputation for driving national and regional media coverage, managed complex communications strategies and translated business objectives into compelling brand narratives.
It was this track record of consistent media results, deep journalist relationships and executive-level storytelling that made Media Minefield a natural next step — a place where I can continue to turn news into opportunity.
What’s the best piece of advice you’ve ever received?
+ Maybe not advice, but a rule to live by I have taken to heart is “we all die in the end.” While it may sound morbid, to me, it’s a spotlight asking “What are you doing with your time, your voice, your talent?” We only have one shot at this, so what am I going to do with it? It reminds me to not delay my truth, not obsess over every misstep and not waste time or energy on pleasing the wrong people or playing small ball. PR and media relations is hard work, and it’s relationships that matter. But respect those behind the headlines and remember their names, and stay kind. When it’s all said and done, your reputation is what remains.
What are three things people don’t know about you?
+ If I had a choice of cold vs warm vacations, I would choose snow/mountains over sun/beaches every day.
+ I have a deep love for animals, so opening an animal sanctuary would be a dream I would love to fulfill.
+ I’ve never missed a vet appointment for our dog (Skip) and cat (Church), but have rescheduled my own doctor appointments six times. Priorities are clear.
What’s one thing on your bucket list that you’re determined to accomplish?
+ Visiting Lord Howe Island, which is well off the coast of Australia. Only 400 tourists are allowed at a time. No crowds. No commercial chaos. But one of the most pristine and beautiful areas in the world.
