What did you do before you were a Miner?
I worked as a reporter for daily newspapers — first in Duluth, Minnesota, then in Olympia, Washington, and Everett, Washington, near Seattle. After that, I served as an editor at magazines — “Gardening How-To,” “Minnesota Parent” and “Minnesota Good Age.”
What do most people not understand about the news?
Editors and producers are bombarded with PR/marketing pitches every day. And yet, they also need the best of those pitches to make sure they’re finding timely stories to fill their pages and time slots. When pitching, timing — and understanding how newsrooms work — is everything.
If you could time travel and spend a day at any past or future event, where would you go?
New Orleans to see Louis Armstrong perform at a small club. New Orleans is one of my favorite places, and I think the energy and joy in the room with Louis and his hometown fans would be incredible. I absolutely love brass — and Louis and his bandmates were masters! I’d request the song “Skokiaan.”
If you could have a dream dinner party, who would sit at your table?
Family and friends with all expenses paid would be No. 1. My second choice would be a celebrity tennis party! I would use the ATP and WTA rankings to determine the top 5 men’s and women’s tennis players in the world and invite them — and all my tennis friends.
